Mushrooms and Fairies

It has been raining here in Southwest Louisiana for weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks...well, you get the picture. It has been so wet, some fairies have decided to camp out in our yard for a little while. As my husband is terrified of fairies, he mowed over their little village one Saturday afternoon! No worries, the fairies are a persistent bunch and immediately began new construction! A day later, and I am NOT exaggerating there!, exactly one day later, their village was up and running again!! Here is a sneak peek into their tiny little world!

I would include more, but the fairies caught me taking these pictures and threatened to hog tie me if I continued to disturb them! They are a feisty little bunch!!

Accountability & Success: Yeah Baby!! {weight loss plan}

Yeah baby!!! Some success!!! I am on a weight loss journey! I lost 2.5 pounds the 1st week and 1/2 a pound the 2nd week!! Have you gotten moving yet? I feel great! I did change up my plan a bit {click here Weight Wake Up Call to see the details of my initial weight loss/fitness program plan.} I AM writing down everything I put into my mouth. That is so hard!!! I have actually returned some foods to the pantry because I did not want that fatty food written down! Ha!! I AM also doing the 30 Day Shred video 4 days a week AND playing tennis 2 times a week. I am loving the tennis!! One day is an hour and the 2nd day is an hour and a half.

So what are your excuses? There have been some days {especially the 2nd week} that I haven't wanted to move or eat properly. Gotta keep chugging along though! Let's chat & motivate each other!! Happy shredding!!

Weight Wake up Call! {weight loss and age}

Soooo this is how I felt this morning when I woke up! Large and NOT so in charge! I just spent the weekend in Houston, TX with a skinny friend eating, enjoying an Astros game, and laying by the pool. I woke knowing I really need to get in a serious diet plan for losing weight and a serious exercise schedule! Remember this post, Woes of the Big 4-0!, well I have to do more than skip the fast food restaurants. It's just not going to fall off without some exercise. {Dang it!}

I immediately thought of my dear friend Jillian Michaels. Nahhh, I've never met her, she actually scares me cuz I know she would tear me up, and she would have a heart attack if she saw what was in my pantry! I do have her video, 30 Day Shred, which is awesome!! {This isn't my 1st rodeo! I have to be honest here. Exercise videos work IF you actually pull them out & use them! Consistency is the key which is what I am aiming for seriously, seriously this time!}

So I got moving this morning! Ate a fat free yogurt and put on my workout clothes. Spent a sweaty 20 minutes with Jillian and then sat down to write my exercise schedule for weight loss. Part of this plan was to create a personal progress chart to keep me accountable. {I can email it to you! Just leave me a comment below!} The chart begins with my beginning weight and measurements {ugh!!} and a place to write in these numbers weekly. I also have a BMI chart that I used to look up my current weight & discovered I am now in the OVERWEIGHT area!! I have NEVER in my life been there!!! The next part of my diet and exercise plan is as follows:

Write down EVERYTHING I put into my mouth daily!!
Exercise on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays with Jillian and the 30 Day Shred video.
Exercise on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays by taking a brisk 20-30 minute walk.
Play tennis for an hour weekly on Wednesdays.
Research my daily caloric intake to lose weight safely and successfully.
Begin changing the eating habits I see trending in my daily journal.
Stay accountable via my eating journal, personal progress chart, and BLOGGING my results!

Do you coupon?? {grocery and online}

Do you collect grocery, online, or manufacturer coupons?? With the economy basically in the toilet {my humble opinion, raise your hand if you agree!}, I have begun to really research and actively use coupons. Years ago, we began getting the Sunday paper so I could clip coupons and look for deals. All to often though, the coupons just swam in a sea of confusion in my junk drawer.

I eventually became a smidgen more serious and would actually surf the sea and throw away expired coupons and give the few remaining to my husband for the grocery buying adventure! YES, my hubby does all the grocery buying!! {Do you hate me? Hehehehe!} He would grumble and complain and I would send him on his way.

Did I mention that my hubby is in SALES for a living?? So the economy decided to take a dip in the toilet and suddenly those coupons were looking a little better! But I wasn't organized so I needed to find a plan that worked for ME. Yes, I see the ladies on Extreme Couponing with massive binders, that is not for me. I see the coupon sleeves that organize the coupons by product categories, that is not for me either. I still felt disorganized so I developed my own system. I bought a small notepad, cut card stock pockets and glued to the pages in the notepad, and then organized my coupons according to expiration date. I am not a stock kind of gal. I don't want 10 bottles of detergent lurking in my pantry so I use the coupons as I need the product. Now if I have a really, really good coupon for something I don't need yet, but the coupon is expiring, I will use it. With my new system, I can easily see which ones will expire! My hubby goes to the grocery once every 2 weeks so at that time, I pull out my little notepad and sift through the coupon slots looking for products we use and eye-balling expiration dates on the awesome ones so I don't waste them. I love it!!!

This is Charlotte! Charlotte is a black and tan Coonhound mix! I had the pleasure of bringing Charlotte and one of her friends, who you will meet in a second, to the local radio station to promote pet adoptions on our area!

Charlotte is such a sweet girl!! She greeted me with a smile and lots of enthusiasm. She sat in the back seat of my SUV like a little human!

This is little Shirley!! Isn't she adorable?? Her personality is just as adorable as her looks! Shirley is a Rottweiler/Catahoula leopard dog mix. She loves to play and is also so very sweet! She jumped in my SUV and promptly climbed in my 6 year olds lap. She insisted on riding this way, but my 6 year old was not having it! Hehe!

Both of these sweet dogs belong to one of our local animal rescue groups 4 Paws Society. I have only been volunteering with them for a short time, but these dogs have already made a big spot in my heart. Some of them have been through so much, yet they always welcome you with a smile and a thumping tail! I have 2 rescued dogs at home and they are both such angels!! {They have to be with a 6 year old little boy running around the house and terrorizing everyone.}

SO WHAT'S MY POINT? RESCUE, RESCUE, RESCUE!! You can find many agencies online that have dogs desperately seeking a good home. You can start right here on Pet Finder.com! The site allows you to search by animal {dog, cat, bird, furry, and even barnyard!}, by breed, and location. Can't open your home to a new pet? Then volunteer to help! The rescue animals love any attention and love they can get. You can search for Animal Welfare Groups on Pet Finder.com as well! Volunteering has made a difference in my life!! It can make a difference in yours too!

Woes of the Big 4-0!

I am so proud of myself today!! I was starving & jones-ing for some Raising Cane's!! Instead of indulging myself, I deprived myself & headed to the safety of my home!

It all started when I turned the big 4-0 almost a year ago. Before turning 40, I was a decent size in clothes. Not skinny, but happy with where I was {oh, who am I kidding? I would have loved to lose 5 lbs, but it wasn't a huge priority}. For the 1st 6 months, all was well! Then suddenly {it seems overnight} I gained 4 lbs! No biggie right, I can work that off? Then BOOM, I effortlessly put on another 6 lbs!! What?? Did aliens invade this body of mine! I did some 30 day shreds & shredded not a dang thing!! And NO, I didn't suddenly start pigging out! Someone must be injecting all my foods with fat hormones! Seriously!!

So what is the moral of this story you ask? Wellll....

You are not alone in this crazy, skinny loving world!
Turning 40 sometimes means sprouting a spare tire around your waist!
Everything you eat now will end up on your waist, thighs, and/or butt!
If I can find humor in this, so can you!

Ten Steps to Crazy Shopping!!

No beating around the bush here!!! Let's get started!!!

Go by yourself or with a crazy friend! {That's right, leave the kids and more importantly, the hubby, at home!}
Wear comfy shoes! {You will be attacking the entire mall so be aware of the shoes you select for your adventure!}
Decide your attack plan! {Will you start on one end of the mall and walk the entire perimeter? Will you start in the center & work your way around, then scope out the perimeter? Will you just attack your favorite stores? It depends on my mood! I recently attacked an entire outlet mall!! Yes, I walked the entire thing....I did cheat & move the car a few times! ;) }
Make a mental note that you will be bringing bags to your trunk periodically! {If you tell yourself it's OK to walk back to the car from time to time, then you won't feel frustrated when your purchases get too heavy to carry. Don't lug all those fine purchases along! The goal is to have fun & get some deals!!!}
You do NOT have to stay attached to your friend! {It's OK to separate! Just make a plan to text each other & meet up from time to time to compare purchases. You may spend 30 minutes in one store, while your friend only needs 5 minutes in that store. You will eventually catch up to each other & no one feels rushed or bored.}
When entering the store, go straight to the CLEARANCE rack! {That's right! Skip past the sales lady in the front, scope out the clearance rack & make a beeline to it. You may even have to cut your friend off in mid-sentence once you spot this rack cuz you are just sooo excited!}
Hop from store to store in the above manner! {Remember you don't have to enter them all, just have fun & shop those sales racks!}
Need a break? {Remember it's OK to take your time, just keep in mind the closing time of the mall! Take a moment to rest on a bench & admire your finds!}
Have fun & reward yourself with a Starbucks coffee or smoothie when you're done!

Family Obligations

So you marry your sweetheart and begin your happily ever after. Just you and your hubby right? Wrong! It's you, him, his side of the family and your side of the family. But it's all good because you are young and you can juggle all the family events. No biggie! Life is good!

Then you start having kids and suddenly the family obligations become not so easy to juggle. But you do it after all you want to show off that new baby and everyone wants to see little Jimmy or little Bella. No biggie! Life is good!

ob·li·ga·tion ~something by which a person is bound or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of a sense of duty or results from custom, law, etc.

Maybe you add 3 or 4 kids to your family unit. Maybe you keep it small with 1 or 2 kids. Life gets busy no matter how many kids you have. Work obligations make you tired. School work can be daunting. Factor in after school activities...run, run, run! The weekend is here finally and you want to relax, sleep in, enjoy quiet time with your family. BUT...there is a family reunion you promised your mother in law you would attend, or it's your great aunt's 90th birthday {you know, the one you never see and doesn't know who you are}, or {add your own event here}!!

Life gets hectic. Our lives are busier than ever. But at the end of the day, who would drop everything and anything to be with you in a disaster in your life? FAMILY! Sometimes we NEED a sense of obligation to push us to these events that may not mean a whole lot to us, but did you see the look on "Aunt Mae's" face when you walked up? Sometimes I feel like the world's biggest whiny baby! {Oh, it's so far! Ugh, I wanted to lay by the pool! I am so tired, do we hafta gooo?}

But on the drive home I always look at my husband and say, "Wasn't that fun? Did you have fun? I needed that after all. I'm glad we went."

Raise your hand if you've ever felt the same! And next time life starts to get in the way, remember how happy you may make a family member just for showing up. Families are a blessing from above!! :)

Bathroom Woes...

So my 5 year old son has been having some potty accidents lately! Grrrr!!! It started a few weeks ago, the great parents we are failed to think about the fact that we sent him to bed after drinking nearly a whole can of Mountain Dew without sending him to the bathroom 1st. I awoke to crying around 10:30 that night to discover him in the bathroom totally distraught because he did not make it in time! Apparently, this started a little trend that we hopefully settled today.

The following week he had an accident at school! I was so upset! After talking to his teacher, I discovered that he has become the bathroom monitor! Did I mention my son is a HUGE germ-a-phobe? Apparently, he has been standing in the bathroom and taking note of all the boys that do not wash their hands and then relaying this information to his teacher. So he ends up not going to the bathroom himself! Hilarious right!??!! I just couldn't believe it...well, maybe I could!

So he was warned that he would be punished the next time this happens. He does the little wiggle dance at home because he just doesn't like to take time out from playing to go to the bathroom. I can remember going through this with my daughter too. Well, lo and behold, he had an accident this morning! He is smart enough to try and hide it, but not clever enough to figure out that the wet shorts are a dead giveaway! LOL He even made up a story that his waist hurt (I bet it did from holding in all that pee!) so he needed to change his shorts and his underwear had a hole in them so he really, really needed to change those too. His daddy fell for this!! Well, mommy dearest finds the wet shorts and underwear laying on the floor in the bathroom right outside the door to the hamper. (Seriously, if he had thought to actually PUT them in the dirty clothes, he would not have gotten busted! LOL)

Moral of the story, we sat down as a family and discussed always telling the truth, how he hurt my feelings and his daddy's and God, blah, blah, blah...no TV, no DS, no Wii today! Poor little guy, he was crushed! But you know what? I was irritated and frustrated and my heart broke when my sweet lil man came to me later and apologized in a shaky voice. But the day is turning out awesome!! The TV is off and he is playing with toys he hasn't touched in months AND he has played outside some and we have plans to go back out later!! I just love it when "a plan comes together!"

New Jewel & Organizing Time 3

Well, I have been a busy little bee! Hehe!! Created a new jewel, have a new jewelry line in the works, & did some organizing! Whoop! Whoop!

First off for my new jewel! I had so much fun making this piece! I love working with wire & I combined it with suede. I have never worked with suede before and quite frankly, wasn't too sure how this was going to turn out. Well let's just say, I am a new fan of suede!

Now for my organizing...I had 2 areas that were driving me crazy!!! One was actually my hubby's clutter in front of the kitchen sink. The other area was my 5 year old's toys in my bedroom. Both were solved with cool baskets from Michael's! I had a coupon too! Whoop! Whoop!

Organizing Time 2!

Last week I announced I would FINALLY make myself accountable and get my house organized! I tackled my desk area in my master bedroom. I am so happy to show the results!!!! I actually worked at my desk today and made a couple of custom jewelry orders for a client AND returned all my supplies to their homes when I was finished!! Felt great!!!

What did I do? First, I separated all the loose beads and jewelry findings that were lying around from the paperwork. I separated the jewelry components into like piles. Some of the components already had homes and just needed to be placed there. I had 2 piles of Vintaj supplies and copper supplies that needed a home. I purchased a small storage container from Target for $2.50 and I took a cute gift box given to me by a student from my classroom to house the 2nd pile...cost FREE! I shopped at Pier 1 for the vase and flowers to add some color to the room...errrr...I got carried away there...cost $34. (Hehe!) The rest was a matter of tossing unnecessary papers, filing jewelry magazines in magazine rack, and filing jewelry tips and ideas in a binder that I already had.

Organizing Time!

OK, I know it is a cliche that everyone makes New Years resolutions to get fit and organize! I usually don't make resolutions for that reason. I just like doing my own thing rather than following the herd especially when you don't know where they are headed. :)

Well this year, I kept itching to make resolutions! Still, I denied the urge even though I am a true clutter bug at heart. I was playing on the Internet (my secret addiction...well not so secret anymore, just promise not to tell!) and stumbled across a friend's blog announcing that she was going to participate in a 52 week challenge to get organized. Intrigued I clicked the link and discovered an organizing fanatic! Seriously, she says shopping for containers puts her in her happy place! I decided on the fly that this was exactly what I needed! I am so tired of being embarrassed by my clutter when people drop by unannounced or on short notice. I have gone on organizing binges before and the house felt sooooo wonderful, but the organizing never lasts. What is different this time you ask? Accountability baby! And finding a guru that will help with lifelong tips and habits to keep my house clutter free!

The first area I am tackling is not too bad. It is a small area that I can de-clutter and start out with a small success to fuel my fire. My master bedroom has a cool nook that house my desk, computer, and work area to pay bills and make my jewelry. Currently it looks like this:

As you can see, I have jewelry supplies laying everywhere. Some on the left, some on the right. I also have some jewelry magazines hiding under there. I have Vintaj jewelry materials mixed in with Swarovski and copper. When I work on the computer, I have to shuffle some things around. No telling what else I'll find when I tackle the pile of unknown underneath some of the bead orders that just arrived. I'm on it though & so excited!! Stay tuned for picture of the organized area and what else I found in my pile!

Why do I craft????

I have been "crafting" since a very young age! I started with pot holders when I was soooo young. I then moved onto cross stitching and would move back and forth to that craft several times over several years. I sewed clothes for a time. I even tried painting in high school, my best friend was an artist, even though I had no clue what I was doing! LOL I have scrap-booked and still do when I manage to find the time. My current passion is beading!!! I feel like I have escaped to a fantasy world when I am with my beads. I love all things about it...collecting beads and findings, looking for ideas, sifting through my stash for new found treasures, and the whole process of creating a piece from start to finish. I feel tension and stress just float away while I am "working." I use the term "working" very, very lightly because I really feel like I am so happy during the process and time literally flies by.

If you totally understand my feelings, yay! If you don't, then read this article I found proving that crafting can be therapeutic! And if you need to convince your family or significant other why you should be spending so much time crafting, then print them this article! =D

The Healing Arts and Crafts

Harvest Season

Fall is my absolute favorite season! I love opening the windows and letting the cool, crisp air inside. I love the friskiness the air brings to everyone. I love driving in my Sequoia with all the windows rolled down and the wind whipping through my hair. I love buying pumpkins and hay and colorful mums. Sighhhh, I just love everything about fall!!

Right now as I type this entry, I have all the windows in the house open and the sounds of outside are floating in and the whir of my ceiling fans are sending out comforting sounds too! In a few hours, the Saints football game will be on and the whole family will share the coach to cheer them on. Love it, love it!!

I wanted to share pictures of my garden with you and my latest jewel creation! I have sunflowers and pumpkins growing in my 1st ever garden! I am so excited!!! I don't have a green thumb so when these babies started growing and growing, I just couldn't contain my excitement!!

HERE ARE THE DIRECTIONS FROM BOMOBOB:

Double click on the file to edit it.
Click the tab that says "Tuning"
Look for the lightest spot in the photo, the bit that's closest to white.
Now slide the "Highlights" slider until that area is nice and white. If some other spot starts getting too bright, then just concentrate on that spot instead.
Now look for the darkest part of the photo, and slide the "Shadows" slider until it's as dark as you'd like it to be.
See the difference? That's "POP".

Picnik:
Click the "Exposure" button.
Click the "Advanced" button. (don't be scared!)
See the little box that pops up on the right side with the scary graph?
Drag the "Highlights" slider until the blobs on the right side of the graph get close to the right edge of the graph.
Now drag the "Shadows" slider until the blobs on the left get close to the left side.
That's "POP".

Click on Image, Adjustments, Levels…

Right below the scary graph, drag the little black triangle to the right until it's just below the part of the graph where the blobby curve starts going up towards the right.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Julie Riisnaes. I’m married to Pete and we have 4 grown up children and a teenage foster son. I live in Derby UK. One of my daughters, Rachel, fell ill with cancer in 2009 and it seemed very much as if we would lose her. Praise God she came through and is still in remission.

2. How did you get started with your shop?

I used to do a lot of craft work with Rachel while she was ill. When she recovered Pete suggested I have a go at selling some of my paintings. I started by selling silk ties on eBay and gradually built up the business. I started selling on Etsy at the beginning of this year.

3. Why do you love what you do?

I love silk painting because the colours are so bright and vibrant. I also love the unpredictable way in which the paint behaves. I enjoy working at home because it means I can be flexible and spend time with my family, friends or church when I want to (within reason!)

Ahhhhh, feels so good to be jotting down my thoughts!! Between school starting, creating a garden, and a new workout I started, I have been missing in action did ya miss me?

School is back in full swing! My class is awesome!!! But boy are we tired! They had new 1st grade rules to learn as well as a new way of working together. Then the parents came the 2nd week in the evening for an Open House. I always love the beginning of a new year! The smell of crayons, meeting my new little friends, and getting to know my new parents for the year!

My daughter began her 8th grade year and my little one started Kindergarten. Homework starts next week so our evenings will step up a bit in the busy department! Oh, not to mention me grading papers! Ha!

I also began a new workout....Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred!!! Awesome I tell you, just awesome!!! My goal is to lose 10 pounds by Oct. 31st!!!! I am watching my calories & fat grams (boring!) and completing Jillian's workout video 5 days a week. The video has 3 fitness levels on it. In the beginning, I thought I'd never make it to Level 2! Now it's 8 workouts later and I'm almost ready to step up!! Yay!!! That feels so good!!!

So that is what's up in my neck of the woods!! Still watching for my pumpkins to sprout too!! I have sunflowers coming up too!! Peace out!! 8-)

Imagination Station/Summer Reading Chpt. 10

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 10: Imagination Station of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

Whose image are we created in??? Ponder this question in silence for a while....

God created us in HIS image! All of us...our bodies, our souls, our brains, our imagination! In Chapter 10, Patsy calls us to remember this simple and frank fact. He created US and we are GOOD! God gave us all talents and gifts to be used, not hidden. Unfortunately in today's society, we are so busy that we often do not allow time for our imagination....our gifts...our talents.

There is a great exercise in this chapter in which you write down how much time you spend sleeping, working at your job, cooking & preparing meals, household duties, time spent with God, etc. This was an enlightening exercise for me! I love to make handcrafted jewelry. I feel I'm pretty good at it & it makes me FEEL GOOD! I often feel guilty for this time crafting because it's time spent away from the family & not participating in their activities. But when I did this exercise, I realized that I don't actually spend that much time crafting in comparison to all the other callings in my life. Completing this exercise really lifted the heaviness in my soul! Wonderful!!

What is God's design for you? I leave you with these words from Patsy...

Loss & Breathing Space/Summer Reading Chpts. 8 & 9

My thoughts and reflections on Chapters 8 ( loss) & 9 (finding breathing space) of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 8, we are looking at how we deal with loss. Not just the death of someone close to us, but loss in say health, prosperity, etc. I found this chapter a little easier to get through. I guess because in my life, most of my losses have been through death, which I obviously cannot control. My family did go through the loss of our home for about a year due to a hurricane, but again this was something way out of my control.

Another reason I feel this area was a little easier was because I am already doing what Patsy suggest in this chapter (unlike some of the other chapters). I didn't have to reflect very far and discover areas within myself that needed tons of work. I discovered through Patsy's exercises that I am praying to God either in thankfulness for the good and happy times or asking for help during my losses.

So what gets me through....here is a list (also recommended by Patsy):

Vent! "Venting helps us to lower our pain level so we can make room for healing" ~Patsy
Cry and LAUGH! Yes, allow yourself to laugh!
Pray...especially remembering that "the cross holds the weight of the world's sin; it is a sign of life because of our resurrected Savior; tears are shed at the cross, tears of gratitude-gratitude that we are forgiven and that we are forever companioned; and one day every tear will be wiped away." ~Patsy

In Chpt. 9, we are asked to look at how we find breathing space and what do we do during that time. I smiled deeply when I saw this chapter. Breathing space is something I am always searching for. I used to do a terrible job at this, but over the years, I have gotten better. I am still lacking one component that Patsy help me to discover. I'll tell you about that in a minute.

Patsy impresses on the importance of finding some breathing space to escape our routines, our relatives, and even ourselves! This space can be found in many different ways. Personally, I love to escape to a big tub of bubbles and a good book. I stay there until the water is cold and my fingers and toes look like prunes! My family has learned that during this time, they should not even knock on the door unless it's an emergency. I try to do this once a month. Also, I try to read a chapter or two in a good book nightly while everyone in the house is asleep. During that time, all my troubles and worries melt away....even thoughts of myself. I find since I've started these two simple things, I have become a much happier person and better mother.

The component I am lacking is listening to God! I say my prayers every night, but I admit I do a lot of talking to God rather than just listening. Patsy recommends taking just 5 minutes a day to listen to what God has to say for your life. I'm definitely going to add this to my breathing space. What about you? 1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a mommy, a wife and when I can find time to breathe, an artist. I love to draw, to paint flowers, to make fabric and of course I love to make flowers.

2. How did you get started with your shop?

One day in late March, I went out looking for a small flower to put in my hair, but I could only find plastic flowers. I have always believed that women could/can do anything, so I decided to make my own flower. I attached the little flower to my hair and went out. Surprisingly, I received many compliments! Well to make this long story short, I made four more flowers and went on vacation. On my way home, I started to think about Etsy and my flowers. I wondered if anyone would like my little flowers and as I sat there with my suitcase on the floor, I decided to list my flowers on Etsy in April. HandmadeFlowers.etsy was born that day:) Yippie!

3. Why do you love what you do?

I love being able to express myself, to learn more about myself and to spend time with myself. Making flowers allows me to be an artist.

Summer Reading/ Apology :)

Whew!!! Life has been busy lately! I apologize, but my thoughts on Chpt. 8 of Patsy's book will be posted Sunday along with my thoughts on Chpt. 9. So if you are reading along with me, I hope you went on to Chpt. 9 & didn't wait for me! ;)

I usually do my reading on Saturday, sleep on it. Then journal my thoughts on Sunday. Well, we had a busy weekend! I brought my jewels to our local Farmers Market this weekend. Boy was it hot & really zapped the energy right out of my body! Then Sunday, my husband & I started working on our pumpkin patch/garden! I love fall & adore pumpkins so we've decided to plant our own this year! Very exciting!! Also, as I am a teacher, back to school is beginning to get in full swing for me as a teacher and us as a family. Between beginning to get my classroom ready, trying on old uniforms, and purchasing needed uniform items for this year, well, Ha! I feel like a chicken running around without it's head. Hehe!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm a stay at home mom of two great kids, ages 2 1/2 and 5. My husband, kids and I live in Livonia (Detroit area), Michigan. Before having children, I did cancer research, so my current "job" is a lot different, and more challenging! I learned to crochet from my grandma when I was 8, and picked it up again when I was in my 20s.

2. How did you get started with your shop?
I made first afghans, then bags, as a hobby. I started lining the bags because it made them so much more useful. I decided to start selling them as a justification to be able to keep making them, and Etsy is an easy way to do that as I have the time.

3. Why do you love what you do?
I love being home with my kids because it gives me a chance to actually spend time with them, see them grow and develop, and teach them in the moment. I love making my bags because it gives my creative juices a means to flow- creating the patterns in my head, turning them into reality with the yarn and fabric, and sometimes finding others who love them as much as I do!

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy.
Having been on Etsy for a little over a year now, I still fell like there's so much to learn about being successful. I've found some great friends on Etsy who are such a help and encouragement, and that's really helped me keep it up even in the times when things are slow or my time is stretched with other responsibilities.

Moodiness/Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion Reflection #7

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 7 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 7, Patsy discusses taming our moodiness! Hmmm...yep, been guilty of that label myself! Patsy calls moodiness shoe goo because these particular emotions tend to stick and cling to everyone we encounter when we are feeling, well, moody. Sometimes my swings of mood give me whip lash! Ha! This is definitely an area I have sought to control because it is so "catching". I tend to avoid moody people because I pick up on that mood so easily and boy, I don't need that!
I have found that the way I deal with my mood swings depends on how bad the swing is. Sometimes I embrace it and hide away from people. Through this journey this summer though, I am finding that if I acknowledge my problem (ownership is half the battle), then look for a positive spin (sometimes this is soooo hard, but I try very hard to find it), then turn it over to God through prayer, then I feel so much better and happier. A lot of times, the prayer helps me to to let it go because I know it's now in God's hand and He will take care of me.

Patsy identifies 7 ways to cure our moodiness:

Recognize we have choices. Feelings are feelings. You can't really control them, but you can control how you BEHAVE!
Know yourself. Stay away from gloomy people!!
Find a prayer partner.
Watch what you watch...meaning movies and TV. If your moods are affected by what you see, then don't watch things that drag you down.
TALK!! Don't remain silent! Talk to a friend or pray.
Talk about your feelings, but don't go on and on and on about yourself. Express yourself, but learn to lend an ear as well.
Memorize verses on joy, listen to music, do something that fills your heart with happiness or calmness.

I find this scripture very moving this week:

"Keep me safe, O God;

in YOU I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, you are my Lord,

you are my only good."

Psalm 16:1-2

My prayer for this week:

Dear God,

You are the most high and dear. Please lift me in your spirit and help me to avoid greed in my life. Renew your spirit within me and help me to remain focused on you. With you in my life, I shall never want. Happiness will be in abundance and my life's path will be clear as I walk with you.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My Name is Joyce and I was born and raised in the San Diego area. 50 years later, I am still here. I live in the North County of San Diego. I have been married to my wonderful husband Jack for over 9 years, we just bought our own condo 6 months ago. We live happily here with our cat Diesel. I have some physical issues that make it so I cannot work outside the home, so between church, my water exercises, things I do here and my new found Etsy I am busy.

2. How did you get started with your shop?
Actually that is a funny story, Jack was reading an article in the Readers Digest magazine about a place where you could sell crafts or vintage items called Etsy. So I had some of my baby items in bins just waiting for family and friends to have babies to give them to, so I thought, "Hey, I may just give this Etsy a try." I listed my first item Feb 15, 2010, to date I have sold 14 blankets, and one baby hat.

3. Why do you love what you do?
My Mom taught me to knit in 2003 shortly after the death of my grandma (her mother) and I just took to it. I was giving away blankets, hats, and booties when ever I heard someone was pregnant or just had a baby. It was so satisfying to make and see these baby things get finished. Now that I am knitting for my Etsy store, I love it. I look forward to learning all I can about photographing my items, I love packaging up the items and knowing that they are going to a sweet baby...I even had a customer buy three receiving blankets for a triplets baby shower, how cool was that!

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy.
I am getting into more natural fibers, mostly at the request of customers here on Etsy. its fun to knit with the wool, cottons, bamboo, and even alpaca yarns,(which by the way sheds). I have learned all about how to blog, and twitter, things I did not do before my shop. I have joined two teams here on Etsy, CAST which is Christian Artists Street Team, and CAPS which is Christian Artists Promoting Shops. The friends I have made and the support I get from these teams is so wonderful, besides the ability to share our faith openly we have prayer lists and really know what is going on with each other. I just had the 100th heart on my shop today,thanks to Denise at seaglassgems4you, and I thank you Trish for this chance to be featured on your blog.

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion Reflection #6

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 6 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 5, Patsy discusses taming our greed and changing our actions to please God above. Now when I say greed, I am not talking about greed for worldly possessions or money. I am talking about indulging in things that may be displeasing to God. Such as overeating, overspending, tv, gossip, spending too much time on things that distract us from our families or friends. The internet is a good example of wasting time rather than enjoying the beauty of our world, our families, and our friends. (I am very guilty of that one!)

In this chapter, Patsy had me cracking up with laughter and nodding my head in agreement! I am soooo guilty of having a stressful day, then stopping off at Walgreens for a Snickers bar or Sonic for some fried cheese. After all, I feel lousy so I deserve a treat right? Well, no actually! How about find some quiet time to reflect on what happened that was so lousy and how I can fix it next time? Hmmmm, it's easier to grab that candybar or bag of chips isn't it?

Patsy encourages us to find other ways to keep ourselves from becoming distracted by the many, many pressures of life. She proposes that if we already have a set list of things we can do when we are feeling pressured, then we will be prepared for the distraction. One way she suggested was to find several scriptures to memorize for such times. I admit that I got a little sweaty here as my knowledge of scripture is limited. This is something I'd like to work on and this book has really helped with that.

Here are the scriptures I find comfort in:

Romans 13:14 "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh."

1Chronicles 16:11 "Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always."

Psalm 37:4,7 "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desire of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass...Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him."

My prayer for this week:

Dear God,

Please renew your presence in my life and help me to walk in faith. Please help me to be a positive role model of hope and faith. When I am rolling in despair and self-pity, help me to remember those that are less fortunate than myself. I am blessed and need your help to rise above my selfishness. Thank you for always being my light and hope.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Well today is my birthday, the big 24! lol.. I grew up as a military brat living overseas in Japan and Belgium. I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia and have been here for 5 years now. I have a passion for creating jewelry, writing, blogging, painting, fashion,traveling, cooking, eating, driving my MINI Cooper and trying new things. I strongly believe you should try everything at least once!

2. How did you get started with your shop?
My jewelry started off as a hobby and grew into a passion that began to consume my time. Next thing I knew I had tons of jewelry and no one to wear it. So I started putting my jewelry up online on Facebook, many people urged me to start selling online but I was intimidated at first. It was not until my friend, Elisabeth of Arona Designs, convinced me and walked me through it. So here I am on Etsy!

3. Why do you love what you do?
I love making jewelry because it is an escape. I can be away from all the drama, the stresses of everyday life and just create. The end pieces are personal, from the heart, made with love and usually tell a story. Ya know how people say a picture will bring back memories, well for me jewelry does the same thing. When I travel I love to buy jewelry as a token of my journeys. So every time I wear it, I think back to those memories. Each time my jewelry is worn again it is also experiencing new adventures and creating more stories with me. Therefore, I like to think that my jewelry is taking on new adventures and creating stories with each person who wears my pieces.

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy.
I am still a rookie, but def. learning fast! The one thing I can say is find a good Etsy Team to be a part of. I found the CAST Team and they have been awesome to work with!

Week of July 12th Reading: Chunky Monkey

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion Reflection #5

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 5 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 5, Patsy discusses hope! Have you ever noticed that people who seem to have all the troubles in the world also seem to have an abundance of hope? Take Helen Keller for example who said:

"I thank God for my many handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work, and my God." ~Helen Keller

Wow!! Simply amazing! Someone who was deaf and blind is thankful for her handicaps because she had the key to life....faith and hope in God. I admit that in my short lifetime so far, I have felt deep despair and wondered, "Why me Lord? What have I done?" The answer is because He knew I could handle it at the time, I did nothing, and during those times, He carried me even when I turned away.

In Patsy's exercises, she asks you to define hope. I wrote "Hope is that little light at the end of a dark tunnel. This light is found through faith. Hope is light. Hope is knowing that God is always carrying me when I cannot hold myself upright. All I have to do is love Him, follow Him, and ask for what I need."

I don't pretend to be the most positive girl on the block, but I do feel strong. I do feel that I can accomplish the things I need to do and want to do with God's help. I also know there will be many times I will not want nor feel I can accomplish a task God has given me. He will carry me through those times and I will come out of that tunnel stronger and more faithful. Thank you Patsy for helping me to realize that!!

My prayer for this week:

Dear God,

Please renew your presence in my life and help me to walk in faith. Please help me to be a positive role model of hope and faith. When I am rolling in despair and self-pity, help me to remember those that are less fortunate than myself. I am blessed and need your help to rise above my selfishness. Thank you for always being my light and hope.

I didn't actually take this picture. A friend of mine did and I immediately thought of God's fingerprints. She graciously allowed me to use it because she wanted all to see his beauty!

I don't think the picture needs any other explanation. Isn't nature divine and glorious as is God?

Leann is a joy to work with! I ordered some coasters from her for Mother's Day and asked for this custom magnet for my dishwasher. It was originally a save the date magnet, but she re-designed it for me so I know when my dishes are clean or dirty in the dishwasher! Every household should own 1 of these! Now to get to know our designer!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! My name is Leann and I am an independent, hard working, single mother of two beautifully crazy teenage girls! I love a great concert, camping, fishing, family time, relaxing with my bulldog Gunner and a great movie! Probably a chick flick, sappy love story that you can predict the ending!

2. How did you get started with your shop? When I bought my bulldog, I wanted some kind of home decor of bulldogs. I started looking at coasters on line and realized that they were overpriced and were not going to match the rest of my decor. I started experimenting with leftover tile that I had at home. It took a while to find out what paints work best and what is waterproof. I was pleased and then my friends began noticing them and requesting ones they wanted for their homes. I began selling at craft fairs and was then introduced to Artfire, long story short that lead me directly to Etsy which I have adored! I used to work a part time job at night and hated being away from my girls all day at my full-time job and then all night at the part time. I have increased my sales and am proud to say I quit the part time job, I run my Etsy shop and get to be home with my girls at night! Very rewarding!

3. Why do you love what you do? Etsy has been a great platform to market my creations while having fun! I love what I do, I love to create, especially those custom orders! The best part is having your customers email you back telling you how happy they were with their order! One of my favorite things to make are the Wedding Save the Date magnets! So unique and fun!

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy. Besides the money, Loving what you do is half of the pleasure, the other half is pleasing others! Thanks to Trish for the opportunity to be on her great blog!!

How did you celebrate the 4th?

Jacque wants to know how you celebrated the 4th of July??

We celebrated by spending the day together at home as a family! I made a yummy dessert!! This dessert has a layer of angel food cake at the bottom, then a layer of strawberries and blueberries mixed in strawberry Jello, then topped with a mixture of cream cheese and whipped cream!! Are you drooling yet?

My cute hubby grilled some HUGE t-bone steaks! He marinated them 1st in Worcestershire, then right before he took them off the grill, he spread a blue cheese, balsamic vinegar, and butter mixture over them. Make you want to slap your momma they tasted so good!!!!

While we cooked and hung out, I whipped out the camera! My kids ran & hid, but the pets were willing subjects!! LOL!!

We popped fireworks that evening along with the rest of the neighborhood. We are outside the city limits so they are BIG and BEAUTIFUL!!

Come Discover Chain!!

I have just fallen in love with chain!!! I started off really simple with the piece below. All I had to do was slide the tube bead on, attach a few jump rings, the pendant and the charm, then Viola', done!!

Next, I decided to go for some chain attached to connectors along with some tiny briolettes and wire wrapping. This one was even more fun! Love this look!! I had to order some more chain after this piece I liked it so much!!

Antique Crystal Copper Chain Necklace with Lampwork Focal

On this last piece, I went for the gusto! Ha! I love wrapped loops, but normally a headpin is used instead of wire and the headpins are much easier to wrap with. For this piece, I used 22 gauge brass wire for the wrapped loops and attached the chain every so often to complete the look. I also had not used a lot of filigree so this piece was really, really rewarding for me!!

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion Reflection #4

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 4 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 4, Patsy discusses self-pity! Wow! These chapters are starting to really make me dig deep! I actually had an episode this weekend in which I felt myself wallowing in self-pity. I began throwing the party and then remembered that this chapter was on this topic! How perfect!?! So I abandoned my party and began reading. Patsy had me cracking up! I was Pauline from Chpt. 4, throwing the party and really wanting to wallow in myself. The only difference between me and Pauline was I was not going to drag someone down into my pit with me!

As I was reading, I came to the conclusion that all our emotions so far need ownership. If we hide behind denial, then a solution will not be found (because we don't really want a fix!) I felt so good when Patsy stated that fact in the study guide portion for this chpt. Yay! I'm getting it!!! I owned my self-pity, admitted where it was coming from, admitted my not so Christian actions I was fantasizing about in my head, and was able to take control of the situation and then handle it in a better manner. Once I confronted my source and told them in a Christian way why I felt this way and the help I needed, I felt so much better. I was also able to let go of the negative thoughts I was having! Thank you Patsy!!!

Oh! And one more thing I try to remember, not always good at, but I do try. When we think we have it bad, take some time to look around yourself. There is always someone in a worse situation or state than ourselves! We need to count our blessing rather than our rain clouds!

I leave you with some advice from Patsy:

"Pity is not pretty."
Patsy list these words as words of defeat..."never", "can't", "won't". I was Amening through this list! A light bulb went off for me. I do not allow my 1st graders (I'm a 1st grade teacher) to use those words!!! So why on earth am I allowing myself to use them!! Jeez Louise! LOL
"Take ownership that you are feeling sorry for yourself."
"Ask God AND others to forgive you."
"Memorize verses that lift you up when you feel like crumbling."
"Deliver me, Lord, from MY, MINE, More, and Me!!!

My prayer for this week (same from last week since I feel it still relates):

Dear God,

Please lead me and guide me toward kindness and truth in all my actions and emotions. Please hold me and help me to practice self-control in my emotions. Help me to ask myself these questions when I feel emotionally challenged: 1. Are my words the truth? 2. Is this something Jesus would say? 3. Am I the one to deliver this message?

Fingerprint Friday: Thunder Clouds!

Where have you seen God today? His beautiful fingerprints are everywhere. I saw Him today in these thunder clouds rolling in.

My 5 year old and I went outside this morning to take a dip in the pool. When we walked outside, I immediately noticed these thunder/storm clouds rolling in. The clouds surrounded my house on the South side and the East side. In the west, the sky was sunny and the sky was a beautiful blue on that side. You can see from the picture how one side is dark and the other is light. I see God here, not just because the sky was stunningly beautiful, but because God is light and when we find darkness in our lives; He is still with us. All we have to do is invite Him in and He will shine His divine light upon us!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Nancy. I am married, for 33 years, we live in Rhode Island, have two grown children, and I am owner, creator, and seamstress for my Etsy shop. My shop is: http://www.etsy.com/shop/NancysBagsEtc http://www.etsy.com/shop/NancysBagsEtc I have been sewing since I was a little girl. My Mom and one of my sisters taught me a lot and I have taught myself many useful tricks along the way. I started sewing dolls clothes around age 10 then on to sewing most of my own clothes. Many years later, I sewed a lot for my children. Now they are grown and have moved out on their own but still need Mom to hem this, fix this, or sew something for them occasionally, which I love to do. I still sew clothes for myself, household items like pillows, slip covers, I love making quilts, and of course bags and purses of all different shapes, and styles.

2. How did you get started with your shop?
My daughter told me about Etsy and I decided to check it out. I had been selling my bags and purses at local consignment stores for a while before opening up my Etsy shop. I thought it was a fantastic idea so I opened shop in October 2009.

3. Why do you love what you do?
I love sewing. There is such a vast assortment of fabrics that are available today, and I am constantly thinking up new and different ways of using the fabrics. I love the fact that others want to buy something that I have made. It is such a great feeling. I am always busy sewing, knitting, cross stitch, needle point, crafting, or making stained glass items, and gardening - just love being busy and creative.

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy.
I have met a lot of wonderful people on Etsy. They were very helpful when I first opened my shop and had a million questions. I am on three great teams with other Etsians, Team HHU, Cac Team, and Cast team. We help each other, promote each others shops and creativity. I have really enjoyed meeting new members along with all the friends that I have made in our friendship thread: "Making new friends on Etsy".

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion: Reflection #3

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 3 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 3, Patsy discusses ANGER! I had a hard time with this chapter. Between Father's Day and my avoiding facing my incidents of misguided anger, I have procrastinated on this posting. Usually my friends do not see my anger nor do strangers. I bottle it up & it comes out at home with my immediate family. My mom has seen it too.

I had a very ugly incident with a stranger in Walgreens once that has left an embarrassing & shameful blemish on my soul. It started out relatively innocent. I was trying to make a copy of a picture on their photo machine. I had never done this before & was having some trouble. A lady was waiting for the machine & was standing so close to me, I could hardly move. She then moved to the side of me, still standing so close she kept bumping my purse. I turned & politely stated that I had several pictures to copy & I might be awhile. Well, she started yelling at me & I succumbed (I was already irritated with my use of the machine & her intrusion into my personal space) & I yelled back. It was nasty & ugly! I finally snapped & realized how out of control this behavior was & I told her we had done enough & then I ignored her while she continued to try to goad me.

I felt horrible for weeks. I wanted to somehow find her & apologize. I avoided that store initially because I was so embarrassed! The point is indulging my anger did nothing for me! I felt like a bad person for a long time & the memory has never left. It is human nature to blame others for our anger. I blamed her initially. She shouldn't have been in my personal space, she should have politely stepped back when I said I would be awhile, yadda, yadda, yadda. I was very irritated with the machine & irritated with my lack of knowledge ie: control over the machine so my statement that I may be awhile most likely came out snippy. My facial expression most likely had "snotty" written all over it! I had several pictures, the correct thing to do was to smile & state how frustrated I was not knowing how to work the machine & offer her to go 1st. Maybe that wouldn't have mattered. The lady behind me was probably having a rough day or something on her mind since she snapped so quickly at me & engaged me in an ugly argument for so long. Who knows? That's my 2nd point...we never know what people are going through or have on their minds at any given moment!! Before reacting in anger, I need to 1st check my filter on my emotions & 2nd, put myself in the other person's shoes.

Patsy states several "ideas" on anger:

Put your words through the filters of kindness and truth.
OWN your emotions! If you don't own it, you can't fix it.
Anger affects our appearance, health, sanity, and our relationships.
Talk to God before opening your mouth!

My prayer for this week:

Fingerprint Friday: Dragster!

Where have you seen God today? His beautiful fingerprints are everywhere. I saw Him this past weekend in my beautiful niece.

She is 19 years old and races a dragster!! I was able to watch her race this past weekend. She is suited up in fire proof gear...tennis shoes, pants, jacket, gloves, then lastly the helmet. Her dad tethers her helmet to the back of the car, her hands are strapped in, and a seat belt is worn. It was over 100 degrees that day! No complaints from her, she gets in fearlessly and does her thing! I think it is amazing the God given strength she has to get strapped behind the wheel of this powerful machine and drive over 150mph down the quarter mile track!

Hump Day Feature: Maylees Garden

This week's featured designer is Libby, otherwise known as "Maylees Garden". Libby specializes in natural vegan soap and eco friendly laundry detergent. Libby also makes soap for dreadlocks and wonderfully scented perfume oil.

I have her Ylang and Patchouli perfume oil and it smells fabulous!! And it doesn't wear off as quickly as perfume!! I also have some of her Cinnamon Vanilla laundry soap. Smells wonderful and is safe for my High Efficiency front loading washing machine.

Now for more about Libby the designer!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Libby and I am a 35 year old married mother of 3. I have two boys ages 12 and 16 and my miracle baby Maylee who is 2 years old. I love to do organic gardening, and I am planning a huge garden of only heirloom varieties this year. I am on a mission to be self sufficient and I have a goal of being totally off the grid and growing the majority of our food in the next 3 years. It's a lofty goal but ya gotta have one right?

2. How did you get started with your shop?
I started making soap as a hobby in 2006. I did it mostly to add an element of danger to my somewhat boring life and to provide my family with a pure natural soap to use at bath time. My soap making kinda snowballed into a full blown Etsy shop in 2008 after so many of my friends wanted to purchase my soap. I figured if they want some maybe other people will too so I opened up Maylee's Garden Vegan Soaps in May 2008.

I went from selling bath soap to laundry detergent and realized the demand for an all natural laundry detergent was great. So my shop is now mostly laundry detergents. I also cater to those with dreadlocks by providing an all natural shampoo bar. It's hard to find an all natural shampoo for dreads that won't build up. I am quite proud of my shampoo bars. It's also good for regular hair too, cause it doesn't build up and it wont strip color since its just handmade castile soap. No phosphates!

3. Why do you love what you do?
I love being able to provide a quality product to people looking to get away from harmful commercial detergents, soaps, and shampoos. I feel so blessed when I can make someones laundry chore actually be enjoyable! That makes me so proud! I love creating, and brainstorming to make products that will benefit people in a positive way. If I go a day without creating, I feel like I have wasted that day. Whether its soap or sewing or any craft in between I just love what I do from the very depths of my soul.

4. Add anything else you'd like us to know about yourself, your shop, or your experiences with Etsy.
There is so much I would love to share, I will throw a few things at you guys randomly. I suffer from Fibromyalgia. Every day I am in pain, I struggle through and am determined this disease isnt going to keep me from my life...although some days it wins.

It took me 5 years to have Maylee...after a miscarriage and a full term stillbirth in 2005, I finally had Maylee in Oct 2007. There are 10 years between my youngest son and Maylee..and it is perfect! They love her!

It took me about 6 months to develop my bath soap recipe. I am quite proud of it. I also make liquid soap!
I used to write for Handmadenews.org before it started being a public blog. I wrote marketing articles, I really enjoyed sharing my knowledge of all these years of selling online. I have been selling online in some form or another since 2001 and since 2005 full time.

I am married to the man I met at my last job before I got so bad off with the Fibromyalgia. He is from Malaysia. We both worked in a nursing home. I have always been in the nursing profession, and I do miss it. However life has other plans, and I am enjoying the ride.

To those of you with Etsy shops, the one tool I feel you shouldn't be without is EtsyHacks. Go to http://www.etsyhacks.com The tools on there are invaluable! Read the site and download what you think you can use, or download it all! I did and I can run my shop SO much better now! Another tip for those of you with Etsy shops is to get on Facebook, make you a fan page and USE it. My sales went up noticeably once I got my fan page going. So make the time to do it. It's time well spent. Twitter is also a good way to promote, but honestly if you're short on time, I would recommend Facebook over Twitter. Facebook will allow customers to actually get to know you, and that makes this whole handmade experience so much richer. And if you just have a little bit of time to promote your shop every day, facebook is the best way to spend that time.

Lastly I would like to mention I am so totally grateful for the love and support from everyone who has purchased from my shop. My family and I are so grateful and we feel so blessed my little shop has become so successful. I couldnt have done this without you all. So from the bottom of my heart, I want to say THANKS!!!

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion: Reflection #2

My thoughts and reflections on Chapter 2 of the book I Second that Emotion by Patsy Clairmont:

In Chapter 2, Patsy discusses FEAR! Ewww!!! That icky word that makes our bellies feel sick. We all experience it, but how we handle it is key. I love this statement Patsy makes: "When we make up our MINDS to take our emotional health seriously, we will do whatever is necessary to take care of our ourselves."

Repeat those 1st 6 words out loud, "WHEN WE MAKE OUR MINDS..." Our mind is so powerful. We can use it for good (You know, healthy, positive thoughts. The kind of thoughts Jesus taught us to have.) or evil (fear, negativity, judgment, anger....). Patsy asks that you make a list of 3 boundaries you can establish to protect your mind (and that pesky fear that seeps in and grows like thousands of weeds!) Here are mine:

Prayer!! Ask God for help!! (Asking for help is an issue I have and am working on resolving.)
Do not let the fear manifest by asking these questions: 1. What is the worst that will happen? 2. Will ____ matter in 5 years? 3. It is what it is, don't make it anything else! 4. I will get out of MY OWN WAY. Because 9 times out of 10, we are so hard on ourselves and we are the problem, not anyone or anything else.
Give negative people the boot! Stay away from them so their negativity does not spread to your mind like a cancer!

I will leave you with a part of a reading assignment Patsy gives that "spoke" to my heart and a special prayer she asks you to write:

For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.

My prayer for this week:

Dear God,

Come into my heart and mind. Show me your light, see my through my fears, and through your presence, make me stronger.

Where have you seen God today? His beautiful fingerprints are everywhere. I see Him in my green cheek conure, Jacque.

If you look closely at his belly, the peach colored area is shaped like a heart!! Isn't that amazing? Jacque is just one of God's humble creatures. It has always been my dream to own a beautiful bird that loves me and loves attention. Jacque loves "scritches" on the head and behind the neck. He also loves "hanging out" with the family. He is just so cool and we are blessed to have him!!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi my name is Jas. I am from NEW JERSEY, I am very artistic in nature and I wanted to do this always ,now because of Etsy and I got the opportunity to do this. It's like a dream come true. I liked handmade things ever since I could remember. I always make my own clothes during special occasions. I learned how to sew, do crochet, and embroidery from watching my mom and grandmother. Jewelry was a new found talent I never knew I had. I am very excited to combine my technique in crochet and beading, I just Love to Make Jewelry! Especially alot of different styles of Earrings.

Summer Reading: I Second That Emotion: Reflection #1

My thoughts and reflections on the Introduction and Chapter 1:

Patsy gets down to it right there in the introduction. No messing around, here it is in black and white. I like that and I must say she pinged me in the head already! Patsy says that we usually blame OTHERS for our anger, but the truth is anger resides in US. I know I am so guilty of feeling anger at other drivers on the road. I get angry that they are holding me up!! So not true, the truth of the matter is maybe I should have left a little earlier! Ping! A better solution to our anger is laughter!! Yes, I am all for that!!! She also lets us know that we are hardest on ourselves, but we need to remember that WE ALL HAVE WEAKNESSES!

In Chapter 1, Patsy discusses the "Woe is Me" syndrome. Hmmm....raise your hand if you have been there! My hand is up!!! Patsy asks us to think of our garden or hiding place...somewhere we might go when our self-esteem has taken a blow or where we just simply feel comfortable. Don't laugh....my #1 place is the bathroom!! First thing in the morning, I read my prayers there before the distractions of the day start. When I need to be alone, its the bubble bath I retreat too. Something about the bathroom keeps the peeps away! LOL!

Patsy gives out some reading assignments too...Romans 12:2 & Psalm 91:1-16. Romans in a nutshell said to me focus on God & HIS will for you & everything else will fall into place. I have found the times when things haven't felt right in my life or my emotions took control, I had definitely NOT put God 1st!!

I have gotten long winded here so I will leave you with two prayers I wrote as suggested by Patsy.

Dear God,
Please take control of my life and my emotions. Please steer me along the right path. Amen

Dear God,
Thank you for this new day. Please take me into your secret place so that I can experience life the way you intend. When I stray, please reel me in and help me to focus my eyes on you! Amen

Where have you seen God today? His beautiful fingerprints are everywhere. I see Him in my five year old son and the time we spent together today. I hear Him in the sound of our laughter.

My dear son loves to go eat at Sonic. We sit in the car and eat our food. He loves to roll the window down and look at the birds. Today, he randomly looked at me and said, "I love you!" He had to have a strawberry smoothie just like mommy. We ate, laughed, and took lots of silly pictures of ourselves with my cell phone. Fabulous time together!!!

Beginning this summer, Monday May 31st to be exact, I will be reading one of Patsy Clairmont's books titled, "I Second That Emotion Untangling Our Zany Feelings". I had planned to start reading it as soon as I got it, but with May being such a busy month for end of the year for teachers, I have decided to wait.

I actually read the introduction, but the book comes with a CD and a study guide!! I just love that!! I really want to dive in and absorb the material rather than rush through the book. I'll be focusing on a chapter a week. The chapters are short, but the study guide has scripture readings to ponder as well as our emotions as women! I'll be posting a reminder on my blog probably a week before. I hope you'll join me and share your comments each week on what you got out of each chapter!

Where do you do your creating? Do you have a secluded spot where you can "get away from it all?" My space is a tiny alcove in my bedroom. I have 3 large windows, 2 of which meet in the corner to make my desk area. The third window meets the wall of the window behind the printer. There is always lots of natural light filtering through the blinds. I love my space! It's small, but it does the trick. Here is a peek into my world:

This is where I keep all my beads and tools. As you can see, I love to scrapbook so it doubles as storage for all my scrap-booking supplies too. I can spend hours at a time in my little space. I have lots of little birds that fly in and out of the backyard and lizards that peer at me from time to time from the patio window while I'm creating. Above one of the windows I have the following quotes:

This cute little rabbit is what we found recently in our front yard. It was around 3:00 in the afternoon. The rabbit was about 5 feet from my front door. It clearly knew we were watching, but he let us enjoy him for about 5 minutes. He or she was eating some of the soft weeds in my yard. My startled neighbor found a nest of rabbits in one of her bushes. She was watering one evening and they all came hopping out!

What are 10 things you wish you would have known before you became a mother?

1. How much love was possible for my children! Sometimes I think my heart will burst!! Sometimes the love brings tears to my eyes!! Let them know it!

2. How much heartache I would feel. We can't save them from every situation even though you will want to! They have to learn in order to grow and sometimes that means going through things that are uncomfortable, scary, and hurtful.

3. Trust your mommy instincts! They are always right!! Trust yourself and take care of your kids first, the rest will fall into place. (You'll understand this completely once you have 2!)

4. Trust in your faith!! Children are challenging and sometimes you will feel like you have no control and are doing everything wrong. Remember that God gave you your children with their personalities that He feels you can handle. He is there for you!!

5. Raising children is the hardest thing you will ever do! As they grow, the challenges change, but there will be hard decisions to make or handle at every age.

6. Being a mom is the most rewarding thing you will ever do in your life!

7. Your own mother will have a wealth of wisdom for you. Trust her, she's been there and possibly done that!

8. Take time for yourself!! If you are not happy, then most likely the children aren't happy either. You must treat yourself well in order to be the best mom you can be!

9. Laugh, play, and cry with your children!

10. You WILL make mistakes along the way, but you are human! That is how God created us! There is no such thing as a perfect mom!!

Enjoy being a mommy!!

My Fun Work & Other Thoughts of the Day!

Ok I have a little, tiny confession to make! Don't tell anyone! Hehe! I sent my dear husband off with my 4 year old to go fishing so I could have some quiet time to finish up our personal income taxes and complete my brother's tax return. I honestly intended to do this, but well...I got a little distracted.

First off I had to fold some towels and put more in the wash. But maybe I'll go get some donuts while I'm by myself and no one would know! Ha! Nooo, can't do that. These extra 2 pounds that are coming and going will never disappear if I do that! So go fold the towels. While folding the towels, I spied my computer beckoning from my desk. So hopped on Facebook to check things out.

Oh! Wouldn't it be nice to open the windows and let the cool morning breeze in!?! Next I finished the towels, but decided I needed to go check out my Etsy shop. Oh! I'm in a Treasury so back to Facebook. Hmmm, noticed some new blog posts today from friends. Thinking I haven't updated my latest pieces on my blog so off to my blog. Well, before I can write, I just have to check out what's happening in and around the blogging world.

Ok an hour later still haven't started those tax returns! LOL! I may get to them this afternoon, but 1st I'll post here then, while no one is home (ie: to watch me make a fool of myself!) I have to get on the Wii and play my favorite game, "Just Dance". If you've never played, it is so much fun and a great workout!! You have to follow the dance moves on the screen to 80's music and you get a score upon completion of each song. Love it!!

Family Obligations

fam·i·ly ~a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not, any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins

So you marry your sweetheart and begin your happily ever after. Just you and your hubby right? Wrong! It's you, him, his side of the family and your side of the family. But it's all good because you are young and you can juggle all the family events. No biggie! Life is good!

Then you start having kids and suddenly the family obligations become not so easy to juggle. But you do it after all you want to show off that new baby and everyone wants to see little Jimmy or little Bella. No biggie! Life is good!

ob·li·ga·tion ~something by which a person is bound or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of a sense of duty or results from custom, law, etc.

But on the drive home I always look at my husband and say, "Wasn't that fun? Did you have fun? I needed that after all. I'm glad we went."

Raise your hand if you've ever felt the same! And next time life starts to get in the way, remember how happy you may make a family member just for showing up. Families are a blessing from above!! :)
